About this position
The Claire Lilienthal School K-2 Madison Campus Garden Educator position is an AmeriCorps Fellowship program, run in collaboration with Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) and Strategic Energy Innovations (SEI). This position offers emerging science and climate protection educators and leaders unparalleled professional development as they drive cutting-edge environmental solutions and advance science education, outdoors. They will transform this school garden into a lush, living laboratory. This position is unique across the Education Outside fellow cohort, it includes additional hours to gain program management experience, working alongside of and under the direction of the SEI program team as they plan for, deliver and document key elements of this high impact youth science activation program.
As the Claire Lilienthal Garden Educator, you will lead garden-based science and environmental literacy education at the Madison Campus and work with students in grades K-2. The educator must be committed to social justice and have cultivated or be willing to cultivate cultural competence and humility.
The position starts on January 10th, 2020 and ends on June 30, 2021, with the summer months of July and August off between program cycles. During the school year, Mondays through Thursdays are dedicated to teaching in the outdoor classroom at your school site and guiding science, sustainability, and other efforts with the community. Two Fridays a month are designated for professional development through the Climate Corps Education Outside program, which includes formal learning workshops offered within three content strands (garden-based education, leadership for community engagement, and horticulture and garden design), peer coaching, and administration time. The remaining two Fridays per month, this fellow is expected to be onsite, working remotely or at external professional development events in order to fulfill the AmeriCorps hours requirement for this position. There are occasional extended and weekend hours dedicated to service, schoolyard workdays, and community events. This position is provided by Bay Area Community Resources (BACR), and will be supervised by Strategic Energy Innovations, the nonprofit leading the Climate Corps Education Outside program. This AmeriCorps member will dedicate 900 hours per service term to their site.
Depending on your school placement, you may work to steward and strengthen a garden program that has already been created at your site or you may work to help create something new. This might mean creating an edible garden from scratch, determining what elements are necessary to make the space a functional outdoor classroom, procuring tools, and/or continuing to maintain and enhance an existing school garden. Claire Lilienthal Garden Educator Commitment
• Commitment to serve a minimum of 900 hours for the rest of the academic year with the possibility of continuing for the 2020-21 academic school year*
• Participation in a minimum of one National Day of Service
• Active participation in ongoing meetings and professional development alongside the Climate Corps Education Outside cohort of emerging education and sustainability professionals.
• Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
• Have a high school diploma/GED
• Be 17 years old or older
• Pass state criminal and FBI background checks
• Be negative for tuberculosis
• Be able and willing to commit to the 900 hour position with a possibility of continuing in the 2020-21 school year*
• A commitment to social justice
• College degree or equivalent experience
• Experience prioritizing and managing projects
• Experience teaching and working with groups of students (especially ages 5-8) outdoors
• Experience working with children and adults from diverse backgrounds
• Experience with gardening or farming

• The ability to self-direct and successfully juggle many tasks at once, shifting from one situation or task to another fluidly

You will receive an AmeriCorps living allowance stipend of $2,115 per month, or $1,057 every two-week pay period, and an end of program cycle education award of $3,097.50 per year.
