Location

Chabot College is looking for a passionate and motivated Fellow to help the college plan for its energy and waste transition to Net Zero.

The duties include:

conducting an inventory and assessment of all 3 scopes of emissions at the college;
helping to identify energy efficiency and mitigation strategies to bring down the college’s GHGs, co-drafting a strategic plan for achieving net zero “ready”-- starting with a review of other Net Zero strategic plans and reporting back on themes and features that stand out and best practices;
preparing a report to be presented to shared governance committees, senates, leadership, and Board of Trustees;
developing a dashboard to automate our ongoing energy and waste use, as well as to display campus GHG emissions and Environmental Hazards in service areas for members of the college community to track and learn.

Desired Qualifications:

● Bachelor’s degree in energy systems
● Proficient in HTML, CSS, Java, Python or other programming languages to build an automated dashboard to display the college’s emissions.
● Access to a car.
● Independently perform a variety of technical duties including research, data compilation and report preparation.
● Collaborate with students, faculty, and staff
● Collect, compile, analyze and present a variety of data in a meaningful way. Think critically and offer solutions when appropriate.

The position will provide opportunities to develop professionally including:
• Managing projects and evaluating goals to make the college more energy efficient
• Presenting compelling written and verbal reports to key stakeholders
• Building relationships and collaborating with students, faculty, and staff
• Looking at energy efficiency and transition strategies through a “just transition” perspective by working with an urban college which serves predominantly low-income, first generation students

Cohort:
The successful candidate will be part of the Fellowship in Community College Sustainability (FiCCS) cohort. FiCCS presents a distinct opportunity to shape sustainability strategy at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District and well beyond.

At the core of the FiCCS Program is developing the next generation of thinkers and doers to help address sustainability issues in educational settings. Roles as energy, resource conservation, and sustainability managers are needed to meet these issues head on. Roles in educational sustainability require a distinct combination of aptitudes including project management, data analytics, communications, and community development. In addition to the Climate Corps training, this position offers professional development opportunities and customized mentoring designed to build the core competencies necessary to execute sustainable programs or practices long after the Fellowship is complete.

As a FiCCS Program participant, the Energize Colleges Fellow will work on pressing climate and sustainability problems and be relied upon to work toward replicable, system-changing solutions. A combination of job training and professional development will help the FiCCS Program participants hone marketable skills and draw important professional connections while making a marked difference in the community.
