About The Watershed Project
The Watershed Project (TWP) is a nonprofit organization based in Richmond, California whose mission is to inspire Bay Area communities to understand, appreciate and protect our local watersheds. Along with our many community and local group partners, through educating, community organizing, restoring creeks, shorelines, and native plant communities, and implementing vital green infrastructure projects, TWP is committed to building environmental resiliency and equity in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Position Overview
Upon supervision from the Programs Director, The Climate Corps/AmeriCorps Fellow (CC Fellow) is a major support role for the Outreach Coordinator as well as for the Education Team. The Watershed Project provides many service learning opportunities for students and community members in West Contra Costa County and beyond, many of which the CC Fellow will help implement with the guidance from our Programs Director and our Outreach Coordinator. Many of the service learning opportunities include large events, smaller more frequent workdays, as well as field trips with students from our partner schools. The CC Fellow will be passionate about community engagement, watershed awareness and environmental justice.
Description of duties:
Community Outreach and Engagement (55%)
- Inviting Richmond and North Richmond community members to participate in projects such as planting trees and gardens in front of their homes, testing their tap water quality, and sharing their desires for community improvements through interviews and surveys.
- Recruiting groups and volunteers to participate in stewardship events such as clean-ups, planting or weeding.
- Supporting staff and volunteer stewardship events such as urban greening workdays, trash assessments, volunteer cleanups, and large community events such as MLK Day, Earth Day, and Coastal Cleanup Day.
- Attending and participating in targeted community meetings.
- Tabling at fairs, festivals, and other events to promote The Watershed Project’s work.
Environmental Education (35%)
- Prepare and deliver in-class lessons and outdoor field trips with K-12 students.
- Maintain and organize materials for education programs.
- Assist with coordinating education program schedule, field trip transportation, and other logistics.
Communications and Fundraising (10%)
- Support with TWP’s monthly newsletter Ebb and Flow by writing occasional articles.
- Participating in community outreach for fundraising and/or support with fundraising events.
Basic Eligibility
AmeriCorps fellows must:
- Be US citizens or legal permanent residents
- Have a high school diploma/GED
- Be 17 years old or older
- Pass state criminal and FBI background checks, and a national check in the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Registry
- Test negatively for tuberculosis if working with minors
- Be able and willing to commit to the 11-month service term
- Be able and willing to work remotely if needed due to ongoing COVID-19 public health considerations and shelter-in-place orders.
Desired qualifications/characteristics:
- The ideal candidate will possess some of the following knowledge, skills, and experience:
- Passion and experience mentoring, supporting, and working with youth
- Familiarity with Richmond and surrounding West Contra Costa communities (San Pablo, El Cerrito, El Sobrante, etc.), and an ability to relate to people from these communities and provide culturally relevant programming.
- Comfort with leading groups of youth in an outdoor setting.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish highly desirable.
- Experience with career coaching, teaching or tutoring is a plus.
- Proficient with computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.
- Flexible, enthusiastic, and able to work effectively with a diverse range of people.
- Self-directed, detail-oriented, and dependable.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Work is performed in an office and outdoor setting. Office location is at the Richmond Field Station in Richmond, CA, with outdoor program locations primarily in West Contra Costa County and Oakland. Until COVID-19 restrictions ease, most office tasks will be performed remotely and all outdoor field work will be performed only with small teams, masked and socially-distanced.
- Fingerprinting and TB test required after hire.
- Regularly sits at a computer station and operates electronic equipment 6 to 8 hours per day.
- Work involves walking on uneven or muddy terrain. Work requires squatting and kneeling.
- Frequently lifts, carries and positions objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
- A valid California Driver’s License is highly desirable.
- CPR and First Aid certification is a plus.

BACR employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or submit weekly COVID-19 test results. BACR covers the cost of test and associated travel expenses.
