The Energize Colleges program is recruiting a recent graduate for a 10-month fellowship beginning October 1, 2019 to support students in exploring energy careers and in implementing innovative solutions addressing climate, energy and resource efficiency goals at college campuses across California. This individual will work closely with College of the Desert to support student interns, assist faculty members with academic infusion, work to make connections at area high schools, and track projects outcomes.
The Desert region of the Inland Empire is rapidly becoming a hub for renewable energy innovation. This area is currently hosting large-scale wind and solar farms. Despite the high profile of renewable energy in the region, the renewable energy and energy efficiency industry is expected to experience rapid growth, both locally and state-wide, due to recently enacted Zero Net Energy regulations. At the same time, many skilled workers in this sector are expected to retire over the next five years. As a result, the renewable energy sector will likely experience a labor shortage in the near future. This will create a high demand for workers in the renewable energy sector.
This labor shortage will create lucrative opportunities for those who are entering the workforce over the next few years. The College of the Desert recognizes the opportunities that the renewable energy sector can offer to its students and wishes to support workforce development in this sector. To this end, the College of the Desert has already created numerous workforce development programs, including certificate programs in alternative energy, building operator, building inspection, energy auditing, commissioning, advanced lighting, control systems, construction management, ZNE technician and HVAC (heating, ventilating, & air conditioning technology).
Recognizing that the renewable energy sector is experiencing a period of rapid innovation and change, the College of the Desert wants to create a workforce development program that will allow its students to remain competitive in the labor market over the long-term. As a result, with Proposition 39/TAACCCT funding, it has created a Building and Energy Systems Professional (BESP) certificate/degree program. This program will provide an expedited pathway for students to become proficient in a wide range of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies and to quickly develop skills that are in high demand. This program will also allow students to choose a specialization pathway and to receive professional accreditation in their chosen area of expertise.
The College of the Desert rolled out its BESP branded pathway in Fall 2017 and has assisted other community colleges in creating their own programs. However, the College wishes to implement additional measures to aid in recruiting for the program and to improve employment prospects for its graduates. To this end, the College of the Desert will work with an Energize Colleges/Climate Corps Fellow to engage in outreach activities, manage energy internship and employment programs, and contribute to program implementation. In this capacity, you will be helping California transition to a green economy and help the state reach its climate goals.
This fellowship experience will provide you with numerous professional development opportunities, program management skills, technical renewable energy expertise, and insight into the advanced energy field.
