The Energy and Environmental Associate position is supported through an innovative partnership between Strategic Energy Innovations and San Rafael City Schools (SRCS). Aimed at addressing myriad energy and environmental sustainability issues in the education system, this presents a distinct opportunity to shape sustainability practices at SRCS and to influence efforts of energy usage reduction goals. At the core of the program is developing the next generation of thinkers and doers to help address sustainability issues in educational settings. Roles in educational sustainability require a distinct combination of aptitudes including project management, data analytics and community development. A customized mix of on the job training, field work and class time will help the SRCS Program Candidate hone marketable skills and draw important professional connections while making a marked difference in the community.

The fellow will work on development and implementation of the District Sustainability Plan, which includes Core Projects in the following areas:

Green Buildings & Materials
• Work with architects and construction managers on Collaborative for High Performance Schools verification for all ongoing construction projects
• Research and propose replacement green cleaning products for use in schools across the District

• Use an integrated approach that combines infrastructure and education to expand recycling and compost systems and increase District waste diversion rates, with emphasis on the middle/high school level
• Coordinate with lead teachers, custodians, and other key stakeholders at school sites on zero waste infrastructure needs and custodial processes

• Conduct water conservation audits of school sites
• Support implementation of water conservation campaigns on school sites

• Verify utility meter data and track through Portfolio Manager, using analytics to assess key points of intervention
• Engage with all San Rafael City schools to assist with participation in energy savings competitions, long and short term

• Monitor EV charging stations, using analytics to assess key points of intervention to encourage use
• Increase green transportation

• Support expansion of eco-literacy

• Submit Green Ribbon Schools application for SRCS High School District in Fall 2020

• Identify and research new funding sources for supporting sustainability initiatives
• Assist in writing and developing grant applications

• 4-year college degree
• Experience working with children and/or adolescents in an educational setting
• Experience working on sustainability, zero waste, or water conservation initiatives
