Energy and Environmental Associate

Location

The Energy and Environmental Associate position is supported through an innovative partnership between Strategic Energy Innovations and San Rafael City Schools (SRCS). Aimed at addressing myriad energy and environmental sustainability issues in the education system, this presents a distinct opportunity to shape sustainability practices at SRCS and to influence efforts of energy usage reduction goals. At the core of the program is developing the next generation of thinkers and doers to help address sustainability issues in educational settings. Roles in educational sustainability require a distinct combination of aptitudes including project management, data analytics and community development. A customized mix of on the job training, field work and class time will help the SRCS Program Candidate hone marketable skills and draw important professional connections while making a marked difference in the community.

CORE PROJECTS

Zero Waste Green Team Coordination & Education
o Continue implementation of waste reduction efforts
o Coordinate with lead teachers, custodians, and other key stakeholders at school sites on zero waste infrastructure needs and custodial processes
o Support zero waste program implementation at school sites including green team meetings and lunch time monitoring

Green Cleaning Products
o Research and propose replacement green cleaning products for use in schools across the District

Fundraising for Future Sustainability Initiatives
o Identify and research new funding sources for supporting sustainability initiatives
o Assist in writing and developing grant applications

Water Conservation Initiatives
o Conduct water conservation audits of school sites
o Support implementation of water conservation campaigns on school sites
o Support assessments for stormwater management projects on school sites

Outreach and Community Engagement
o Support the coordination of the sustainability committee
o Coordinate and facilitate school site sustainability needs assessments and planning meetings
o Assist with Green Ribbon school verification and documentation

Facilities-Focused projects
o Verify utility meter data and track through Portfolio Manager, using analytics to assess key points of intervention
o Engage with all San Rafael City schools to assist with participation in energy savings competitions, long and short term


QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience 
• 4-year college degree
• Experience working with children and/or adolescents in an educational setting
• Experience working on sustainability, zero waste, or water conservation initiatives

• Passionate about sustainability related topics and issues
• Interested in personal and professional development
• History of self-management, and has the willingness and ability to take initiative, but can also follow directions, and work effectively on a team
• Learns quickly and is not afraid to ask questions
• Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and effectively with others from highly differing racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds
• Understands and can implement coordination steps for events, programs, and projects, and has a track record of following through
• Has strong communication skills both verbally (presentations, facilitation, and collaboration), and for formal and creative writing tasks such as reports, correspondence, and marketing and promotional materials 
• Enjoys and is effective at conducting research and synthesizing data
