About Partner Site
San Mateo County is unique in its diversity of people, cities and geography. The San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) serves 175 schools in 23 districts, which range from urban environments to schools in rural nature preserves. On the whole, San Mateo County serves 95,502 students of whom 33% are socioeconomically disadvantaged and 41% qualify for free and reduced lunch. The dedicated and professional staff at SMCOE works collaboratively with districts, schools, and a diverse array of community partners to eliminate barriers to learning, including those associated with poverty. At SMCOE, we provide many systems of support through a variety of instructional, business, and consulting services. The three main functions of SMCOE are:
- Support and Regulatory
- Educational Leadership and Coordination
- Direct Student Instruction
One of the Educational Leadership initiatives that SMCOE oversees is the Environmental Literacy and Sustainability Initiative (ELSI). This initiative provides "backbone support" to San Mateo County schools in prioritizing environmental literacy and integrating environmental sustainability and climate-resilient practices across a school's campus, curriculum, community, and culture.

Description of duties:
This fellowship will support the Environmental Literacy and Sustainability Initiative’s (ELSI) Green Facilities Technical Assistance Service Offerings. Through a robust offering of programs and services, this initiative promotes environmental literacy and helps prepare leaders to integrate environmental sustainability and a climate ready mindset, across a school community's campus, curriculum, community and culture. Essential Duties for this position include:
- Update landscape analysis of campus sustainability efforts (i.e. Green Schoolyards, Zero Waste, Clean Energy, etc.) at the school site/ district, municipal, and county level, and synthesize research for multiple stakeholders
- Lead project initiative to develop campus facilities dashboards, in multiple school districts, and use dashboard for learning efforts in K-12 curriculum
- Support customized technical assistance services for environmental literacy and green facilities efforts at SMCOE and at school districts and sites - this includes efforts such as Green Ribbon Schools, Sustainable and Climate Resilient Schools Partnership Hub efforts, and other initiatives
- Support design and updates for ELSI Webpage
- Support annual recognition and awards program
- Support in managing high school and college interns
- Support Capacity Building and Network Programs as needed

Basic Eligibility

AmeriCorps fellows must:
- Be US citizens or legal permanent residents
- Have a high school diploma/GED
- Be 17 years old or older
- Pass state criminal and FBI background checks, and a national check in the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Registry
- Test negatively for tuberculosis if working with minors
- Be able and willing to commit to the 11-month service term
- Be able and willing to work remotely if needed due to ongoing COVID-19 public health considerations and shelter-in-place orders.

Desired qualifications/characteristics:
- Passionate about sustainability related topics and issues
- Interested in personal and professional development
- History of self-management, and has the willingness and ability to take initiative, but can also follow directions, and work effectively on a team
- Learns quickly and is not afraid to ask questions
- Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and effectively with others from highly differing racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds
- Understands and can implement coordination steps for events, programs, and projects, and has a track record of following through
- Has strong communication skills both verbally (presentations, facilitation, and collaboration), and for formal and creative writing tasks such as reports, correspondence, and marketing and promotional materials
- Can navigate social media platforms for professional application
- Has some experience updating web sites
- Familiar and comfortable with Google Drive applications
- Enjoys and is effective at conducting research and synthesizing data, and is comfortable using Excel/Google Sheets to perform basic-to-medium level calculations and analysis
- Be willing and able to commute to the office for in-person work, five days per week
