About The Marine Mammal Center
The ocean is in trouble. From the depletion of fish stocks to increasing ocean temperatures, human activity threatens marine ecosystems that are vital to the health of our ocean and all life on earth. As a critical first responder to these threats, The Marine Mammal Center is leading the field in ocean conservation through marine mammal rescue, veterinary medicine, science, and education. Marine mammals are ecosystem indicators, and these animals provide insights into human and ocean health threats. Together, we are taking action today to support a network of scientists and stewards to protect our shared ocean environment for future generations.
Our innovative school and public education programs build a sense of responsibility through a connection to marine mammals and the marine environment, inspiring future ocean stewards and promoting action to protect the ocean. Each year, these education programs and hands-on trainings reach more than 100,000 children and adults, supporting the next generation of informed scientists and engaged citizens who will care for and ensure the health of our ocean and environment.
Position Overview & Description
The Marine Science Conservation Educator is an integral part of the Center’s Community Engagement team that engages with the public to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards and empower visitors to the Center to take action in support of our ocean and marine mammals. The Marine Science Conservation Educator delivers the Center’s public programs and services and helps train and supervise Community Engagement volunteers and interns. This role is capable of teaching all public programs offered at the Center, and frequently leads tours and other onsite programs. In addition, the Marine Science Conservation Educator provides day-to-day direction and guidance to education volunteers and interns, and assists in the oversight of public areas for safety, visitor amenities (brochures, clean restrooms, etc) and general maintenance.
Responsibilities
Leads tours of the Center to visiting groups
Mentors, coaches and leads the Youth Crew Climate Ambassador program
Serves as the contact and point person for volunteers throughout the day as questions arise
Directs the opening and closing of the Center to the public and providing daily information provided to volunteers.
Creates content and resources around climate change, ocean trash and overfishing to support volunteers and guests communicate conservation and guidance around solutions
Creates and maintains timely patient information for inclusion in Community Engagement programs. Ensures this information is disseminated and included in all education programs, as appropriate.
Performs evaluation of program areas and make adjustments to programs accordingly
Approaches and interact with guests to personalize their Center experience
Provides information related to the Center’s mission, core work, patients, exhibits and programs; as well as opportunities to support the Center (e.g. volunteering, membership, donations)
Coordinates Exhibit Hall set-up to ensure room is prepared for visitors
Desired Qualifications
At least 1-2 years’ experience in leading tours or programs for school and/or adult audiences
Strong communication, interpersonal, and writing skills.
Proven experience with customer service preferred
Self-directed and ability to take initiative and see projects through to completion with minimal supervision.
Experience working with volunteers is preferred.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) preferred.
Must be able to work a Thursday - Monday schedule (including weekends, holidays, and some evenings as required).
Have reliable transportation to and from the Center. Please note that the Center is located in the Marin Headlands, an area that is not readily accessible by public transportation.

Basic Eligibility
AmeriCorps fellows must:
Be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents
Have a high school diploma/GED
Be 17 years old or older
Pass state criminal and FBI background checks, and a national check in the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Registry
Test negatively for tuberculosis if working with minors
Be vaccinated against COVID-19 or submit to weekly testing
Live in the state of California
