About the position
As part of our mission to realize climate solutions in Los Angeles and surrounding areas, Climate Resolve concurrently manages a number of initiatives that are designed to promote and implement equitable strategies that improve the lives of residents now in the face of climate change—not 50, 30, or even 15 years down the line. As part of our work, we lead outreach campaigns which offer possibilities for individuals to implement tangible, realistic climate solutions on a day-to-day basis that have a net benefit to their lives and livelihoods. Additionally, Climate Resolve leads community planning projects, like working with city government and residents to install cool roofing and pavement designs to reduce heat as well as helping communities prepare for extreme events.
The Fellow’s role and contributions to these initiatives will include working with our Outreach staff to share real, local solutions to climate change with Angelenos and Southern Californians as a spokesperson and ambassador for Climate Resolve, seeking to build new partnerships with local community groups and constituents. Additionally, the Fellow will work with our Climate Planning & Resilience staff to assist with project and event coordination for our in-person and virtual outreach efforts with diverse communities across the LA region. Climate Resolve is looking for a candidate with a commitment to equity, preferably one who represents one of the constituent communities our work serves.
- Research and compile a roster of community-oriented events and opportunities for tabling and outreach
- Communicate in a timely manner with local stakeholders in order to schedule online/in-person presentations
- Participate in ongoing presentations for local stakeholders, including some weekend and evening outreach events
- Lead online presentations and community engagement through video conferencing apps like Zoom and Google Meet
- Contribute to ad hoc event planning duties in support of outreach initiatives cross the Los Angeles region
- Create social media content including graphics and short form videos to reach frontline communities
- Conduct online outreach while work-from-home restrictions remain in place
- Lead coordination efforts on two climate planning projects, the Baldwin Hills Community Resilience and Access Plan and Commerce Moving Forward
- Co-lead logistics for planning in-person and virtual events for the projects
- Assist in developing stakeholder engagement processes that reach diverse audiences such as community-based organizations, government offices, businesses, and residents.
- Integrate equitable approaches to reaching subpopulations that have barriers to engagement such as immigrants, people with disabilities, and older adults
- Help establish relationships and trust between partners that Climate Resolve interacts with
AmeriCorps fellows must:
Be US citizens or legal permanent residents
Have a high school diploma/GED
Be 17 years old or older
Pass state criminal and FBI background checks, and a national check in the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Registry
Test negatively for tuberculosis
Be able and willing to commit to the 10.5-month service term
Be able and willing to work remotely if needed due to ongoing COVID-19 public health considerations and shelter-in-place orders.
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Experience with in-person outreach, e.g. tabling, canvassing & comfortable speaking in public with diverse communities in a professional and personable manner
- Experience creating content and basic graphics for social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.
- Knowledgeable about the scientific and human impacts of climate change, with the ability to take an analytical approach to best practices for communications on these topics
- Have a keen awareness of the inequities exacerbated by climate change and its disproportionate effect on Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities
- At least some familiarity with the Southern California landscape (particular sectors of interest include: NGOs, service, health, faith, academia, and local government)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including a willingness to ask for help as needed
- Excellent time management skills with ability to effectively prioritize tasks
- Comfortable working online while COVID-19 work-from-home restrictions remain in place
- Energetic and outgoing with a sense of fun!
Outreach Work Sample Request
- Please include a past outreach sample such as a flyer for an event or a slide presentation.
- If available (not required), please include any samples of your work organizing events (such as logistical checklists, engagement plans, or facilitation guides).
- Bilingual in Spanish or another language of one of Los Angeles’ communities, such as Armenian, Korean, Mandarin, Russian, Tagalog, Thai, or Vietnamese
- Knowledgeable about climate policy and advocacy in the Southern California context
- Adept at photography and familiar with video production technology
- Experience with virtual engagement such as Zoom (e.g. breakout rooms and polling) and Google Jamboards
- Experience using Canva, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator
- Familiarity with Wordpress and Mailchimp
