SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL EQUITY FELLOWSHIP POSITION SUMMARY

The San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) is interested in hosting a Climate Corps Safe Routes to School Equity Fellow from fall 2020 through summer 2021 to support ten elementary schools based on a Safe Routes to School Equity Analysis and senior centers in close proximity to the schools. This intergenerational initiative seeks to equip students of these ten schools and senior citizens in San Mateo County with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the built environment as pedestrians or bicyclists, and make the connection between transportation choices, human impact on the environment, air quality and individual and community health. The fellow will work with elementary school students and senior citizens from senior centers near the elementary schools. SMCOE seeks a candidate who can develop and implement this project and related, presentations, and events.

This is a great opportunity for a dynamic individual with strong communication, presentation and analytical skills who enjoys working with children and senior citizens. The fellow will be based in Redwood Shores at the San Mateo County Office of Education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

● Develop successful partnerships with schools identified in the Safe Routes to School Equity Analysis and nearby senior centers
● Assist schools in creating a Safe Routes to School action plan
● Deepen SRTS partner relationships through frequent contact and follow-up meetings, tracking program implementation and student and senior participation.
● Promote bicycling and walking for school trips, for personal health and wellness and environmental health and wellness.
● Educate parents, students, school personnel, senior citizens and community representatives on the health and environmental benefits of walking and biking
● Recruit parent and teacher champions at each school
● Educate senior citizens on role they can play in Safe Routes to School
● Provide customized assistance as schools implement Safe Routes education, encouragement, enforcement, and evaluation activities.
● Assist with school- and community-based SRTS plans and guiding the implementation of walking and bicycling programs.
● Increase participation rates and program awareness among parents, students, seniors and stakeholders at school partner locations.
● Assist in coordinating Safe Routes events at participating schools, including coordination with service providers
● Purchase program incentives and equipment
● Assist schools and senior centers in generating measurable participation results in Safe Routes initiatives.
● Assist schools and senior centers with data collection (i.e. parent/caregiver survey, fall and spring travel tallies)
● Report on outreach activities, results of data collection and maintaining a current, accurate database of school and senior center contacts and participation.
● Attend networking and public meetings to raise program visibility.
● Conduct presentations for stakeholders and community groups.
● Assist with outreach and marketing and promotions campaigns related to Safe Routes to School (videos, slideshows, social media, newsletters, etc.)
● Assist with needs and assets mapping for schools, districts, senior centers and government and community resources
● Assist with efforts to identify Safe Routes to School learning opportunities such as online learning, guest speaker series, and documentary screenings
● Support coordination of a variety of meetings, task forces, seminars, professional development cohorts, and conferences related to Safe Routes to School
● Communicate with funding agency verbally, through written communication and via reports on program status


QUALIFICATIONS

Basic Eligibility for AmeriCorps Fellows:
● US citizen or legal permanent resident
● Have a high school diploma/GED
● 17 years old or older
● Pass state criminal and FBI background checks, and a national check in the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Registry
● Test negatively for tuberculosis
● Be able and willing to commit to the 10.5-month service term
● Be able and willing to work remotely if needed due to ongoing COVID-19 public health considerations and shelter-in-place orders.


Education and Experience:
● 4-year college degree
● Experience working with children and/or adolescents in an educational setting; Experience with senior citizens or a desire to work with them

Other Requirements:
● Ability to work full time Mon-Fri (likely 9:00-4:30 with some earlier mornings, evenings, and weekends) for the fellowship term
● Must have reliable vehicle and proof of insurance for regular work-related travel throughout San Mateo County
● Successful completion of TB test, health screen, and Live Scan/fingerprinting (upon hire)
● U.S. citizen or lawful permanent residence

● Interested in personal and professional development
● History of self-management, and has the willingness and ability to take initiative, but can also follow directions, and work effectively on a team
● Learns quickly and is not afraid to ask questions
● Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and effectively with others from highly differing racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds
● Understands and can implement coordination steps for events, programs, and projects, and has a track record of following through
● Has strong communication skills both verbally (presentations, facilitation, and collaboration), and for formal and creative writing tasks such as reports, correspondence, and marketing and promotional materials
● Can navigate social media platforms for professional application
● Has some experience updating web sites
● Enjoys and is effective at conducting research and synthesizing data
● Is comfortable using Excel to perform basic-to-medium level calculations and analysis
● Spanish language skills (desired but not required)


SAN MATEO COUNTY OFFICE of EDUCATION (SMCOE) OVERVIEW
San Mateo County is unique in its diversity of people, cities and geography. The San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) serves 175 schools in 23 districts, which range from urban environments to schools in rural nature preserves. On the whole, San Mateo County serves 95,502 students of whom 33% are socioeconomically disadvantaged and 41% qualify for free and reduced lunch. ● Support and Regulatory: SMCOE provides support and monitoring to school districts in a number of areas including: local control accountability plan (LCAP), business management, financial auditing, data processing, payroll accounting, human resources, legal services, school district boundaries, state financial standards, and teacher credential registration.

● Educational Leadership and Coordination: SMCOE delivers resources and staff training to thousands of educators each year. We coordinate services and provide staff development in all areas of curriculum and instruction including implementation of Common Core State Standards and the new Smarter Balanced assessment system, STEM education, early childhood education, Transitional Kindergarten, English Learner services, library media services, Environmental Literacy, student health and wellness and educational data services, among others.

● Direct Student Instruction: SMCOE delivers direct instruction for a variety of at-risk student populations including students with severe disabilities and youth who are wards of the Juvenile Court or with needs for an alternative educational program. Additionally most San Mateo County elementary students participate in SMCOE's Outdoor Education program at Jones Gulch.
