Term of Service: Full-time, September 1, 2021 – July 31, 2022
Time requirements: 40 hours/week; 1,700 hours in an 11 month term

Description of Duties:
The San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) is interested in hosting a Climate Corps Safe Routes to School Equity Fellow from fall 2021 through summer 2022 to support schools and their SRTS coordinators in identified areas of concern. This initiative seeks to equip students in Redwood City, east Menlo Park and East Palo Alto with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the built environment as pedestrians or bicyclists, and make the connection between transportation choices, human impact on the environment, air quality and individual and community health. SMCOE seeks a candidate who can implement this project and related, presentations, and events.

This is a great opportunity for a dynamic individual with strong communication, presentation and analytical skills who enjoys working with children. The fellow will be based in Redwood Shores at the San Mateo County Office of Education.


Basic Eligibility

AmeriCorps fellows must:
- Be US citizens or legal permanent residents
- Have a high school diploma/GED
- Be 17 years old or older
- Pass state criminal and FBI background checks, and a national check in the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Registry
- Test negatively for tuberculosis
- Be able and willing to commit to the 11-month service term
- Be able and willing to work remotely if needed due to ongoing COVID-19 public health considerations and shelter-in-place orders.

Desired qualifications/characteristics:

Education and Experience:
- 4-year college degree
- Experience working with children and/or adolescents in an educational setting;

Other Requirements:
- Ability to work full time Mon-Fri (likely 9:00-4:30 with some earlier mornings, evenings, and weekends) for the fellowship term
- Must have reliable vehicle and proof of insurance for regular work-related travel throughout San Mateo County
- Successful completion of TB test, health screen, and Live Scan/fingerprinting (upon hire)
- U.S. citizen or lawful permanent residence

Desired Skills, Interests, and Experiences:
- Passionate about pedestrian and bicycle related topics and issues
- Interested in personal and professional development
- History of self-management, and has the willingness and ability to take initiative, but can also follow directions, and work effectively on a team
- Learns quickly and is not afraid to ask questions
- Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and effectively with others from highly differing racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds
- Understands and can implement coordination steps for events, programs, and projects, and has a track record of following through
- Has strong communication skills both verbally (presentations, facilitation, and collaboration), and for formal and creative writing tasks such as reports, correspondence, and marketing and promotional materials
- Can navigate social media platforms for professional application
- Has some experience updating web sites
- Enjoys and is effective at conducting research and synthesizing data
- Is comfortable using Excel to perform basic-to-medium level calculations and analysis
- Spanish language skills (desired but not required)

- The Fellow will be part of a team of Safe Routes to School practitioners. (The team includes one other Americorps fellow.) They will receive mentorship to assist them during the fellowship and for life post-fellowship. - They will be given the opportunity to attend workshops and conferences as participants and presenters and be guided through this process. They will participate in school-outreach, event coordination and promotion of walking and biking across the county.


BACR employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or submit weekly COVID-19 test results. BACR covers the cost of test and associated travel expenses.
