About Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) Facilities Planning and Management Dept.
The Facilities Planning and Management Department within the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) works to improve the quality of Oakland schools and school facilities to better prepare students for their futures. By providing students with a positive learning environment, we are working to ensure all students feel respected and heard.
Our department also tackles the projects that are not always seen, but often felt: repairing bathrooms, improving energy efficiency and earthquake safety, maintaining and upgrading electrical systems, plumbing, and sewer lines, and improving student safety and security. In addition, our maintenance and custodial teams provide a clean and safe environment that allows our students to focus on learning.
Many of us have children in an OUSD school, and we take pride in providing our students with the foundation for success in life. Our department looks forward to continuing our work with parents, teachers, and administrative staff, the school board, and the broader community to provide the best possible facilities for our students.
Position Overview & Description
The Sustainability Advisory Council is a group of diverse OUSD community stakeholders (students, teachers, parents, community members, and persons with subject matter expertise) representing each district and focusing on areas most impacted by environmental racism and pollution. The Sustainability Advisory Council works closely with the staff-led OUSD Taskforce, meeting once a month, to hold the district accountable for the goals stated in the OUSD Climate Emergency Action Resolution approved in 2020.
The Fellow will support the coordination of the Sustainability Advisory Council and Taskforce to develop the anti-racist, holistic, and ecological sustainability policy and plan for OUSD. Through the support of the Fellow, the Sustainability Advisory Council will engage stakeholders district-wide in sustainability planning and ensure that students are central to the work.
Support coordination and support of OUSD’s Sustainability Advisory Council (stakeholder group)
Support procurement of donations for student stipends for students involved in the Sustainability Advisory Council, and/or support hiring equitable facilitation for the Council.
Support district-wide anti-racist sustainabilty policy development
Support project development for pilot and special projects involving energy & water efficiency
Support implementation of the Collaborative for High Performance Schools program requirements
Develop and maintain document controls
Excellent communication skills and an ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
Strong commitment to teamwork, putting the goals of the team before individual pursuits
Willingness to be proactive and take calculated risks
Results-oriented a plus
A passion for public service, especially in the area of sustainability and climate change
Experience in conducting research and drafting reports
Willingness to have fun while engaging in difficult, detail-oriented, and complex work
Willingness to explore your own privilege, acknowledge your own unconscious bias, examine your own commitment to racial equality, and understand the importance of intersectionality as an analytical framework in the work to create equitable and just solutions
First hand/life experience involving issues of environmental justice
Course work in climate change, ecological systems, resiliency, pubic health, the built environment or energy a plus
Access to a vehicle (for site visits) a plus
Willingness to have a majority remote work schedule (within Bay Area)
Experience serving/working with BIPOC and/or Frontline communities
Fellowship Experience at OUSD Facilities
The individual selected for this position will have the opportunity to join a High Performance Team, working to deliver exceptional value to our students, educators, and the District at large. The Fellow will be fully supported by the OUSD sustainability team, and in particular, will be mentored and coached by OUSD’s Energy and Sustainability Manager (site supervisor). The Fellow’s supervisor will schedule twice a week check-ins for ongoing support and communication, and will identify professional development opportunities. There will be at least one opportunity to attend a conference, and the team will identify grants that would allow for team members to engage in relevant professional development and networking opportunities outside of the District. The site supervisor is as dedicated to the personal and professional growth of the Fellow, as they are to the impact and value of the Fellow’s work for the District.

AmeriCorps is a national service commitment that meets a community’s critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. Bay Area Community Resources and SEI partner to implement Climate Corps AmeriCorps, an award-winning fellowship program that provides professional development opportunities for emerging leaders through implementation of sustainability and resiliency projects with local governments, nonprofits, and educational institutions.
Upon completion of the term, CCAC Fellows receive a Segal Education Award of up to $6,495.00 in return for your service. You can use the award to repay qualified student loans and to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs. Fellows who complete a 1700-hour term also receive a California For All Award of $3,505.00 in cash for educational expenses.
