The Berkeley Unified School District Sustainability Coordinator position is supported through an innovative partnership between Strategic Energy Innovations and Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD). Aimed at addressing a myriad of sustainability issues in the education system, this presents a distinct opportunity to shape sustainability practices at BUSD and to influence efforts of resource reduction goals. The Climate Corps Fellow placed at BUSD will work collaboratively with SEI and the District to support sustainability efforts within each of the eight identified sections within the newly-adopted BUSD Sustainability Plan: Waste; Green Buildings and Materials; Transportation; Water; Energy; Food; Schoolyards; and Eco-literacy and Nature-based Education.

- Zero Waste Green Team Coordination & Education
- Continue implementation of waste reduction efforts within BUSD
- Coordinate with lead teachers, custodians, and other key stakeholders at school sites on zero waste infrastructure needs and custodial processes
- Support zero waste program implementation at school sites including green team meetings and lunch time monitoring
- Organize District-wide sustainability events such as the Sustainability Summit and Zero Waste Week Challenge
- Green Cleaning Products
- Research and propose replacement green cleaning products for use in schools across the District
- Fundraising for Future Sustainability Initiatives
- Identify and research new funding sources for supporting sustainability initiatives at BUSD
- Assist in writing and developing grant applications
- Water Conservation Initiatives
- Conduct water conservation audits of school sites
- Support implementation of water conservation campaigns on school sites
- Support assessments for stormwater management projects on school sites
- Outreach and Community Engagement
- Support the forming and coordination of a District-wide sustainability committee
- Coordinate and facilitate school site sustainability needs assessments and planning meetings


Education and Experience
- 4-year college degree
- Experience working with children and/or adolescents in an educational setting
- Experience working on sustainability, zero waste, or water conservation initiatives

Other Requirements
- Ability to work full time Mon-Fri for the fellowship term
- Must have reliable vehicle and proof of insurance for regular work-related travel throughout Berkeley
- Successful completion of TB test, health screen, and LiveScan/fingerprinting (upon hire)
- U.S. citizen or lawful permanent residence

- Understands and can implement coordination steps for events, programs, and projects, and has a track record of following through
- Has strong communication skills both verbally (presentations, facilitation, and collaboration), and for formal and creative writing tasks such as reports, correspondence, and marketing and promotional materials
- Enjoys and is effective at conducting research and synthesizing data
