Location

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) manages more than 50,000 miles of California's highway and freeway lanes, provides inter-city rail services, permits more than 400 public-use airports and special-use hospital heliports, and works with local agencies. Caltrans carries out its mission of providing a safe, sustainable, integrated and efficient transportation system to enhance California's economy and livability, with six primary programs: Aeronautics, Highway Transportation, Mass Transportation, Transportation Planning, Administration and the Equipment Service Center.

The Caltrans Sustainability Program promotes continual improvement in Department practices to conserve energy, water, and other natural resources, while decreasing greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change. Sustainability is responsible for coordinating and advancing implementation of the Global Warming Act (AB32, statutes of 2006) and Caltrans strategic goals related to Sustainability, Livability, Economy, and Equity.

The fellow will be based in the downtown Sacramento office of Caltrans and work within the Sustainability Program to:
- Support development of Caltrans Sustainability Roadmap 2020-2021 and data collection on energy efficiency, water conservation, and green operations related to Caltrans facilities
- Project manage energy efficiency, renewable energy, and water efficiency upgrades to facilities
- Provide support on data collection and reporting on Caltrans zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) program
- Draft reports, memos, plans, meeting notes as needed in support of Caltrans ZEV program
- Research data tools for improved visualization and reporting of sustainability progress within the Department
- Conduct transportation sustainability research as needed in the areas of ZEV, zero net energy, waste reduction, recycling, active transportation, and adaptation planning
- Coordinate with various Caltrans divisions to facilitate the implementation of Sustainability Program initiatives
- Further develop the Caltrans Sustainability Program website to better convey Department efforts to address sustainability policies, show progress, and foster accountability
