About San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCCD)
The San Mateo County Community College District is a community college system in California with three institutions: College of San Mateo in San Mateo, Cañada College in Redwood City, and Skyline College in San Bruno. The district serves more than 25,000 students each day with both day and evening classes. This Fellowship will be housed in the Facilities Maintenance, Operations and Planning Division, the Sustainability Team which has hosted over nineteen Fellows over the past eight year.
Position Overview & Description
SMCCCD Sustainability - The Fellow will assist in the development of a holistic supply chain sustainability effort and advance circularity across the District. The Fellow will also be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the Paperless SMCCCD Program and other workplace sustainability efforts to reduce costs, create social benefits, and reduce the District’s footprint. This vital role will require an interest and passion for the technical aspects of circularity and engaging diverse audiences in behavior change for sustainability. The ideal candidate is detail oriented, a systems and design thinker, skilled at developing partnerships, and comfortable with ambiguity. This role requires someone who is willing to dive deep into our procurement, surplus and waste management processes to improve and measure performance and engage diverse audiences in behavior change for sustainability.
Responsibilities
Engage students, staff, and faculty, remotely and in person, in the Paperless SMCCD Program through outreach, waste assessments, and advocacy, taking on significant program management responsibilities.
Explore external markets for reusable materials with specific attention to local collaborations and partnerships that support typically marginalized communities.
Continue documenting and benchmarking existing Zero Waste and Sustainability practices including fair labor, ethical origin, recycled content, reduced carbon footprint, and other materiality analyses in the life cycle of commonly used goods and materials.
Effectively collaborate with the Purchasing Department and others to improve vendor selection according to sustainability indicators; work with current vendors on building sustainable procurement processes and options; educate SMCCCD staff on the new policies.
Engage students, staff, and faculty in the Zero Waste Program by developing outreach materials, online educational platforms, and other Campus as a Living Lab (CaaLL) opportunities.
Partner with County of San Office of Sustainability, Reusable San Mateo County, and other agencies in promoting and advancing circularity.
Apply theory of Circular Economy to identify opportunities to refuse, reduce, and reuse items, materials, equipment, etc. within SMCCCD’s processes and materials flow.
Update SMCCD zero waste infrastructure inventory; ensure bins are properly located, identified clearly, and promote zero waste behaviors.
Reduce waste generation by 15% compared to baseline (2017).

AmeriCorps is a national service commitment that meets a community’s critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. Bay Area Community Resources and SEI partner to implement Climate Corps AmeriCorps, an award-winning fellowship program that provides professional development opportunities for emerging leaders through implementation of sustainability and resiliency projects with local governments, nonprofits, and educational institutions.
Upon completion of the term, CCAC Fellows receive a Segal Education Award of up to $6,495.00 in return for your service. You can use the award to repay qualified student loans and to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs. Fellows who complete a 1700-hour term also receive a California For All Award of $3,505.00 in cash for educational expenses.
