About San Mateo County Office of Education and City of South San Francisco
The San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) is located in Redwood Shores and supports public schools throughout the county in a variety of initiatives that seek to provide equity and excellence in education for more than 90,000 students in San Mateo County. The fellow will be placed in the Safe and Supportive Schools department and will specifically work with the Safe Routes to School program.
The City of South San Francisco (SSF) City Manager’s Department: The City Manager is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the City of South San Francisco. The City Manager’s Office implements policy decisions of the City Council, provides leadership and strategic direction to the city’s leadership team and organization as well as ensuring that initiatives and programs align with the City’s mission and reflect the values of our community. The City Manager's Office provides overall guidance to all City operating departments and is responsible for the administration of City programs to ensure the delivery of high quality services in an efficient and cost-effective manner. This includes oversight of major City-initiated projects, outreach to and involvement with community members on issues of local concern, direction of the annual budget process and coordination of City Council agendas.
Position Overview & Description
With the San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE), the Fellow will support several elementary schools and senior centers in close proximity to the schools in north San Mateo County based on a Safe Routes to School Equity Analysis. This intergenerational initiative seeks to equip students of selected schools and senior citizens in San Mateo County with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the built environment as pedestrians or bicyclists, and make the connection between transportation choices, human impact on the environment, air quality, and individual and community health. SMCOE seeks a candidate who can develop and implement this project and related presentations and events.
With the City of South San Francisco, the Fellow will implement a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program throughout schools in SSF through the six E’s framework. This includes education, encouragement, engineering, enforcement, evaluation, and equity. This framework ensures traffic safety measures are in place to encourage more students and families to walk/roll/take transit to school. The Fellow will support SSF’s Every Kid Deserves a Bike (EKDAB) program, including but not limited to, educational outreach, encouragement events such as Bike Month, serve as a liaison between the City and SSF elementary schools and SSFUSD and other administrative duties as needed.
Responsibilities
Coordinate and lead SRTS/EKDAB programming, events, and projects as assigned that result in increased participation in active transportation for north San Mateo county and SSF students and seniors
Document and track SRTS/EKDAB meetings, activities updates, and events
Develop materials, presentations and outreach/engagement materials
Identify potential funding or encouragement opportunities to make walking and bicycling to school safer, easier, and more equitable
Coordinate services and events at schools for walk/roll to school encouragement days
Desired Qualifications
Education and Experience:
4-year college degree or equivalent experience
Experience working with children and/or adolescents in an educational setting; Experience working in a community-based setting
Desired Skills, Interests, and Experiences:
Knowledge of community outreach
Ability to coordinate between events between vendors, schools, and community based organizations
Ability to work collaboratively across multiple sectors and community partners
Project management skills. Understands and can implement coordination steps for events, programs, and projects, and has a track record of following through
Passionate about pedestrian and bicycle related topics and issues
History of self-management, and has the willingness and ability to take initiative, but can also follow directions, and work effectively on a team
Learns quickly and is not afraid to ask questions
Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and effectively with others from highly differing racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds
Has strong communication skills both verbally (presentations, facilitation, and collaboration), and for formal and creative writing tasks such as reports, correspondence, and marketing and promotional materials
Can navigate social media platforms for professional application
Has some experience updating web sites
Enjoys and is effective at conducting research and synthesizing data
Is comfortable using Excel to perform basic-to-medium level calculations and analysis
Spanish language skills (desired but not required)
Other Requirements:
Ability to work full time Mon-Fri (likely 9:00-4:30 with some earlier mornings, evenings, and weekends) for the fellowship term
Must have reliable vehicle and proof of insurance for regular work-related travel throughout San Mateo County
Fellowship Experience at SMCOE & SSF
The fellow will have two site supervisors who will meet with them 1:1 on a weekly basis, as well as informal check-ins. Fellow will be exposed to local city government and local city council operations, and will learn how to work effectively in an executive management team in order to increase walking and biking across SSF.
The fellow will also work closely with a regional county office of education, and will have the opportunity to work closely with numerous community-based organizations (CBOs). SMCOE and City of SSF offer professional development training, a great work atmosphere, hands-on learning, and the opportunity to create long-term and sustainable change through collaboration between SMCOE, City of SSF, CBOs, and local businesses. The fellow will receive mentorship to assist them during the fellowship and for life post-fellowship. They will be given the opportunity to attend workshops and conferences as participants and presenters and be guided through this process. They will participate in school-outreach, event coordination and promotion of walking and biking in South San Francisco. This role offers the opportunity to capitalize on the numerous partnerships in place, and cultivate meaningful relationships that can go beyond the duration of the fellowship.
This is a great opportunity for a dynamic individual with strong communication, presentation and analytical skills who enjoys working with children and senior citizens. The fellow will be based in Redwood Shores at the San Mateo County Office of Education and City of South San Francisco.

Upon completion of the term, CCAC Fellows receive a Segal Education Award of up to $6,495.00 in return for your service. You can use the award to repay qualified student loans and to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs. Fellows who complete a 1700-hour term also receive a California For All Award of $3,505.00 in cash for educational expenses.

Test negatively for tuberculosis if working with minors
Be vaccinated against COVID-19 or submit to weekly testing
Live in the state of California
