Job Fellowship City of San Rafael Monthly Stipend $2355 End of Program Award $1000

Location

The Zero Waste / Business and Community Engagement Fellow works as part of the City of San Rafael’s Sustainability Team to reduce waste and increase recycling of materials, including organic waste, community-wide. This is a fun and challenging position that requires an interest in research, community-engagement, innovative thinking, and a desire to learn what makes people tick!

Much of your time will be around promoting recycling and organics diversion programs both in the business and multi-family residential community as well as in City department facilities and operations. You will learn about and assist the City in developing programs, policies, procedures, and creative engagement efforts related to the not-so creative (but bold) State laws AB 1826 and SB 1383. As a City Fellow you will help with engagement by developing compelling promotions, case studies, action primers and online content to help businesses and individuals comply with these laws and feel good about being part of a larger sustainability effort.

You will work on a variety of projects ultimately determined in a collaborative fashion at the outset of the Fellowship. A big part of this will be to learn about and utilize the best available social science related to behavior change. This will give you a foundational knowledge that will be applicable to any career going forward. It will also allow you to practice some cool strategies aimed at furthering and normalizing sustainable behavior.

We strive to provide meaningful opportunities in a fun, innovative space, and to ensure Fellows leave with a portfolio of projects they can use to further their careers. Opportunities for professional development include the annual Northern California Recycling Update conference, behavior change trainings, and participation in City Climate Action Plan meetings and Chamber of Commerce meetings and workshops, among others. The Fellow will get to work alongside other professionals in the field and in government, including with City Council members, department staff, local sustainable business owners, and a variety of partner agencies and CBO’s.
